A few days by the ocean
I love birth work. I’ve photographed over 400 birth stories here in Colorado, and I can’t wait to photograph 400, 500, 1000 more. But doing birth work is demanding in a way that is hard to articulate. Being on-call and available 24/7 for clients is an incredible honor, but it also requires a lot of my body, my soul, and my sweet family.
The burn-out rate for birth workers is high, and I’m striving to find ways to make this job more sustainable for both me and my family for years to come. One of the things that I’ve found crucial to our well-being is stepping away from Denver for a short period of time. I’ve always loved traveling (I went to Europe and Africa twice before I turned 20!) but I’ve found it’s even more important now that I’m a birth photographer. Of course it’s not necessarily easy to leave or to travel with 3 kiddos under six…but I find that each time we do it, I come home with renewed energy. And my girls SO thoroughly enjoy having uninterrupted time with mom.
We went to San Diego for a few days, and I wanted to share both a few images and a little film I made of our trip. While I may not be photographing births on vacation…I always bring my camera wherever I go, and I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoy having my own kiddos as my subjects :) I didn’t take nearly as much footage as I planned, but I’m so glad we took the time to document even part of our trip. These memories are priceless, aren’t they?
