The Birth of Roma - A Family Celebration at UCH
Blanca and Duane reached out to us early in pregnancy. They were expecting a long-awaited baby…and they wanted their birth story documented. When we found out they were giving birth at UCH with the Center for Midwifery (CFM), we were even more excited. The midwives at CFM are truly special. They care for the families they serve with both skill and compassion, and I’m lucky to call many of them friends.
We also knew that Blanca and Duane’s birth was going to be special because they planned on having their family in the room with them. This wasn’t just a birth story…it truly was the story of a family…and how love can expand and gro.
Blanca was induced on Saturday morning, and she labored peacefully during the day, into the night, and into the following morning. We stayed in close communication the entire time, and despite our fears that we might miss it, Duane kept us updated on her progress and assured us he’d make sure we had plenty of time to arrive at UCH. He did such an awesome job communicating, and sure enough, he reached out with the perfect amount of time (which doesn’t always happen!) Rebecca arrived at UCH and Blanca was ready to start pushing. The sun was beginning to set and the light pouring into the room was so beautiful - illuminating not only Blanca but her entire circle of support.
And then with a strong push, baby Roma was born. She came into the world so alert…and what a celebration surrounded her! I love seeing the reactions of everyone in the room, and the sacred stillness that fell over when family members got to hold this long-awaited baby for the very first time.
