Best Birth Photos of 2020
What a year - for our world and for birthing people. The strength, determination, and beauty that ALWAYS exists in birth was amplified during a year where EVERYTHING changed so quickly. As 2020 comes to a close, I’ve spent the day reflecting 70+ births I was able to attend in the past year. The images I share below are only a small collection of an overwhelming display of the courage and power that existed in the birth spaces across Denver and Colorado. I tried to include an image from every birth I attended…but some births were excluded due to requests for privacy (which we ALWAYS honor).
And I can’t post this collection without also saying THANK YOU to the hospitals, birth centers, and home birth midwives who allowed doulas and birth photographers to support their clients during this pandemic. You are true heroes in so many ways, and the care you provided your clients during such a scary health crisis is beyond admirable. Thank you for holding space, holding hands, and holding hearts in 2020.

The Birth of Axel - a Story of Love and Strength after a Snowboarding Accident
Tyler was in a snowboarding accident in 2019. A serious one. An accident that changed their lives in an instant…and required an indomitable strength from both Sarah and Tyler. A broken neck meant that Tyler was suddenly a quadriplegic. But the story didn’t end there. He worked for weeks and weeks, months and months to regain strength and function. His journey is truly an incredible one (and you can follow @tyler_funk to learn more). And in the midst of this life-altering story…another one also began. Sarah soon found out she was pregnant with their baby - little Axel.
I don’t think either of them ever imagined parenthood starting out this way, and yet here they were….ready, excited, strong, and grateful. Giving birth in a pandemic is no small feat….and then add in giving birth after a life-changing accident…Sarah and Tyler are INCREDIBLE people.
